Kirby Farms

Mechanicsville, VA

Sprawling over nearly 600 Hanover County acres, 350 of which are dedicated to produce production, the 107 year old Kirby Farms spans land and generations. Kevin Kirby is the family’s fourth-generation farmer. His father, who is frequently seen riding a tractor around the property, taught Kevin the family trade, one that Kevin is now passing on to his own 10 year old son. In the last decade or so, under the oversight of Kevin and his father, Kirby Farm, recognized as a Virginia Century Farm, has extended its reach, received GAP certification, and broadened its produce offerings. GAP, Good Agricultural Practices, certification requires that produce grown on a farm is produced, handled, packed, shipped and stored using clean and traceable methods, ensuring food safety. Kirby Farms grows 28 low-spray vegetable crops each year, a few being; kale, collards, beets, onions, cabbage, broccoli, summer squash, zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, cantaloupes, watermelon, cauliflower, and sweet potatoes.
